Anna was referred to us whilst pregnant with her third child. She is from the Congo and was separated from her older two children, who were unable to escape with her. During our period of support, Anna received her Leave to Remain, and her children will soon be with her through the Red Cross Family Reunion service. She suffered from severe and enduring depression, due to the torture she received before fleeing from her home country. Anna was very isolated, with little English and she suffered from anxiety, as well as depression, which meant she rarely engaged with other people. Our volunteer visited every week, accompanying Anna to local groups, shopping and other everyday activities, where she could mingle with other people, and immerse herself in Glasgow life. This helped her confidence enormously and, along with participating in our ESOL classes, meant her English improved. It has now improved sufficiently for her to be accepted on a college course, which will improve her English further. Anna also began to attend our Family Group, initially with her volunteer, and then our Welcome Group. Support for the family has ended recently, when Anna moved home, due to her change in status and her commitment to her college course, which she will attend daily. Anna’s Social Worker commented that her volunteer had changed Anna’s life beyond recognition and the support was immeasurable.
