The family were referred to us when mum Chloe was pregnant with their second child. Chloe had been detained under the Mental Health Care Act 2003 in a unit during her pregnancy, as she was suffering from psychotic illness. Her mental health had been untreated for a number of years resulting in their first child developing an attachment disorder. Dad Danny was the main carer of Chloe and the children, who were placed on the Child Protection Register due to the high level of support that was needed for the family. In addition, their new baby was born with a medical condition which required major surgery at a few days old and then ongoing additional care. Initially, due to the severity of Chloe’s mental ill health – which affected her ability to engage – we supported Danny through one of our male peer volunteers. The responsibilities Danny faced as the main carer were quite overwhelming, especially as this included the medical care of the baby. Once Chloe’s mental health had improved, Danny was keen to access other supports (such as a local dad’s group), and another peer volunteer was identified to support Chloe. Our volunteer has been visiting weekly for emotional support and to encourage positive strategies to support positive behaviour with their first child’s and secure attachment with baby. This was a delicate process, but a breakthrough was made when Chloe, Danny and the children attended one of our Home-Start summer outings. This was the first time Chloe had left the house in a year and the family had a lovely time, especially the older child, as this was the first time the family had ever been out together. Chloe’s mental health appears to be stable and the children have now been removed from the Child Protection register. We continue to work to bring support for mum and dad to a close when it’s right for them.
