Karen started her volunteer journey in 2024 with the Glasgow North team, she helps out at our groups each week. She recently won an award at the ‘People Make Maryhill’ awards! Well done Karen and thank you for sharing your thoughts on volunteering with Home-Start.
What does volunteering mean to you? / Why is volunteering important to you?
I was at a low point and needed a focus, went to Home-Start, after reading about what they do.
Training was interesting and I met loads of lovely folk.
What motivated you to volunteer with Home-Start Glasgow North and North Lanarkshire?
I decided I would like to Volunteer for Group Work. I was still a little anxious, and this was only a short walk from my house which suited as buses and far away places still triggered my Anxiety.
Tell us about an achievement or contribution you are most proud of during your time as a Home-Start Volunteer.
I was recently voted an unsung hero of Maryhill, which I felt slightly embarrassed about. BUT also rather chuffed. 😀
Tell us a little bit about your role. Tell us about an aspect of your Volunteering that you have really enjoyed.
I have been at the group for several months now, and I absolutely love the interaction with the mums, staff and of course, the kids.
What have you taken from your experience of volunteering?
Home-Start is an Amazing Charity that reaches so many who are unsure, or unfamiliar with certain aspects of parenting and just looking for some support.
Why should others choose to volunteer with Home-Start?
I know Home-Start has helped me massively in building my confidence and helping me feel part of something worthwhile.
I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteer work, to contact Home-Start.
